When lyrics are all you have….keep listening.

I heard that you’ve been
Self-medicating in the quiet of your room,
Your sweet, suburban tomb.
And if you need a friend,
I’ll help you stitch up your wounds.

I heard that you’ve been
Having some trouble finding your place in the world.
I know how much that hurts,

But if you need a friend
Then please just say the word

You’ve come this far,
You’re all cleaned up,
You’ve made a mess again,
There’s no more trying,
Time to sort yourself out

Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one,
Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
Now don’t lose your fight, kid,
It only takes a little push to pull on through,
With so much left to do,
You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you.

Grit your teeth, pull your hair,
Paint the walls black and scream, “Fuck the world!
‘Cause it’s my life, I’m gonna take it back, “
And never for a second blame yourself.

Hold on tight,
This ride is a wild one,
Make no mistake,
The day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done,
Now don’t lose your fight, kid (Don’t lose your fight, kid),
It only takes a little push to pull on through (push to pull on through),
With so much left to do

You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you

This song has meant so much to me over the years. And for each chapter of my life, the lyrics of this song have meant something slightly different, but always powerful.

Music is my church. It’s the thing that heals me. When things get rough, I turn up the music and drown out the world. It’s the way it needs to be. In a world with no safety, it’s my only escape.

This song speaks to everyone. The friend, the sufferer, and the ones who might not understand. It’s everything I wish someone said to me, or even just understood.

Someone who gets it, someone who is there for you no matter what, someone who sees you for who you are. (And if you need a friend,
I’ll help you stitch up your wounds.
)

And yet, isn’t afraid to call you on your shit. (Make no mistake the day will come when you can’t cover up what you’ve done)

You’ve come this far,
You’re all cleaned up,
You’ve made a mess again,
There’s no more trying,
Time to sort yourself out
…..
This is where I am now. I’ve never quite been “all cleaned up”, but things could always be worse. And I’m running out of time to sort myself out again. I feel alone and scared and frankly…just over it. This verse stares into my soul every time I hear it. It’s a threat wrapped in hope. And I haven’t figured out what I want to do with it yet.

It’s a song that isn’t afraid to acknowledge pain! It even says, hey, you hurt! That’s okay!

It’s okay to throw your hands up and scream “FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!” At the world! And then fine. It’s fine.

And guess what? The shit you’re going through, all that you’re blaming yourself for?

Well, don’t.

If you listen deeply enough, music has a way of making you see things in a different way. In a deeper, or a possibly more realistic way…or a way that makes you feel community, or possibly even more alone.

Never for a second blame yourself.

We often pick songs that match our moods. Whether we’re trying to get out of that mood, or trying to identify with it further, lyrics and words help us get there. And what we choose to do with those feelings has such a strong impact.

When the world so often feels unrelatable, words and lyrics like this become all the more powerful.

To sing words of ease that speak to such a complicated feeling…it’s everything.

Words mean everything to me. In the form of a book, a song, or something someone has actually said to me…words, when they are true and genuine…seem to always feel like the most important thing.

And of course, this song ends with hope. With the best message of hope one could ask for. The only thing I need to push on for one more second.
Now don’t lose your fight, kid
It only takes a little push to pull on through

Any ounce of hope you can get is an important one. Whether it come from from a book, a song, something someone has said to you, or something you’ve thought on your own.

Take all of it. Use every bit of hope and strength that you can. Some days it may come from a song, some days a book, or maybe an experience you had, or maybe it comes from within you.

But whatever it is…hold on to it. With everything you have. Strength, hope, feelings of community and togetherness….it’s everything.

With so much left to do
You’ll be missing out, and we’ll be missing you

Missing you
All Time Low
